General & Emergency Care

FAQs about general and emergency orthodontic care

Have a different question? Don’t hesitate to call us at (972) 475-9660. We’re happy to answer all of your questions, big and small.

What is orthodontics, and how can it help me?

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on aligning teeth and correcting bite issues. Beyond a straighter smile, treatment can improve your oral health, make cleaning easier, and help prevent long-term problems like uneven wear on your teeth.

When should a child first visit an orthodontist?

The recommended age for a first orthodontic evaluation is around 7. At that stage, Dr. Allo can spot developing concerns and determine whether early guidance would be beneficial. That said, orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age.

What treatment options does Servant Heart Orthodontics offer?

We offer traditional metal braces, KLOwen custom braces, and clear aligners. Dr. Allo will help you choose the option that best fits your orthodontic needs, lifestyle, and goals.

How long does orthodontic treatment typically last?

Most patients are in treatment for roughly 18 to 24 months, though timelines vary based on the complexity of the case. Some plans may be shorter, while others take a bit longer. Dr. Allo will provide a personalized estimate during your consultation.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

Some soreness after initial placement or adjustments is normal and usually fades within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage any discomfort. Our team will walk you through what to expect so you feel prepared.

What should I do if a bracket or wire comes loose?

If something comes loose, gently push it back into place with a clean cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil. Apply orthodontic wax over any poking wire and call our office to schedule a repair appointment.

I lost an aligner. What do I do?

Contact us as soon as you can. Depending on where you are in your treatment, we may recommend moving to the next set or ordering a replacement to keep things on track.

My braces are irritating my mouth. How can I find relief?

Irritation is common, especially after adjustments. Orthodontic wax can cover any rough spots, and rinsing with warm saltwater helps soothe your gums and lips. If the discomfort continues, reach out so we can take a look and make any needed adjustments.

Are there foods I need to avoid with braces?

Yes. Hard, sticky, and chewy foods like caramel, popcorn, and bagels can damage brackets or get caught in wires. Cutting food into smaller pieces and brushing thoroughly after meals will help keep your treatment on track.

What happens if I don't wear my rubber bands or aligners consistently?

Wearing your rubber bands or aligners as directed is essential for staying on schedule. Inconsistent wear can extend your treatment time and affect the final results.

Is it normal for braces to feel tight after an adjustment?

Yes, that tightness means your braces are actively moving your teeth. The sensation is temporary and typically eases within a few days. If you have concerns, our team is always available to help.

My retainer broke. What should I do?

If you have a Retain account, you can log in and order replacements shipped straight to your home. If not, text or call us so we can get you in as soon as possible.
